I want to have a kickass blog too...

Craig's new blog, Elwood Grobnik, is so damn smart that I want to blog my ass off too.

The problem is that I've been very introverted over the past week. I'm embarrassed. I'd say I'm embarrassed for the country, but that gets too close to the name calling and disparaging of the red-staters that I'd like to think I'm above. What I more embarrassed about is the enthusiasm that I had to think that Kerry could actually win. Freezing my ass off in line for an hour and fifteen minutes to vote seemed noble at the time. Now, all I have is this:

Arlington County, VA
John F. Kerry (D) 63,705 68%
George W. Bush (R) 29,545 31%
[This is gonna be the new header for the NAAS blog.]

I'm also embarrassed for all the people who worked their asses off trying to get Kerry elected. Damn, that must be demoralizing.

One of the things that kept me inspired through Bush's first term was that I knew that History is a harsh muthafuckin judge. I knew that a one-term Bush would be judged as one of the worst Presidents of all time. He may still. But he's one-upped his dad and shrugged off that one-term label that would have given me something. That's embarrassing.

So really, I don't care anymore. I don't read my MoveOn.org e-mails. I only half pay attention to Al Franken when I listen to his show. I watch soccer. I have my first beer 15 minutes earlier in the day. I read more - stuff that was written a long time ago.

Anyone that wants to tell me that I am being a defeatist and that "they only win" when I give up, can tell me that shit in three and a half years. Right now, I don't care.

But at least I'm acknowledging this. I'm getting it down and hopefully I can move on.

For now though, my stocks are going through the fucking roof!

Hallelujah! Bob adds comments!! Watch out, we'll be all over the place now...
I was just amazed by the numbers in DC--90% for Kerry, 10% for Bush, or something like that? If your entire neighborhood wants you out--that's your sign. Yeesh.
I'm glad for all the people on the Kerry campaign; it was a good run and helped motivate a lot of people who previously had taken for granted their voter base. The next four years will be hellish no matter who is running the country. The major loss for us is our reputation in the rest of the world, since all our allies and former allies were willing to forgive the quirk that got him elected the first time and were counting on us to make the change this time out.
I'll send you instant cocoa and some of those little handwarmers the next time you have to stand in line to vote. It *is* noble, believe it or not.

All right! Comments!

Thanks for the blog props! I wanted to use it to focus on other stuff than national politics for the moment, but it's hard with the war still on. The hometown numbers:

ChicagoKerry - 801,796 (81.6%)
Bush - 180,440 (18.4%)
Suburban Cook CountyKerry - 587,835 (59.3%)
Bush - 403,334 (40.7%)

The rest of Illinois is basically a Red State, but since 5 1/2 million of the state's 12 1/2 million residents live in Cook County, the GOP had no way to make up the 805,857-vote margin in the rest of the state, even with their strength in the collar counties. They used to be able to compete here when they did better in suburban Cook and even some white wards in the city, now we are gaining strength here even as the GOP consolidates their national majority. The only parts of Cook County that went for Bush were Barrington and Palatine in the far northwest and Palos, Lemont and Orland in the southwest. Yes, Steve, we won Lyons Township (LaGrange and Brookfield). Democrat Melissa Bean even beat incumbant Phil Crane to take Rumsfeld's old seat, so our support is growing even in rich-ass Palatine.

I'm discouraged by the national results, especially because they beat us on turnout, which means that we are truly the minority party now. On the other hand, economic models show an incumbant should have won this one with about 56% of the vote - those models are usually pretty accurate in retrospect, so either the economy was worse than experts thought, or Bush did lose 5 points at the polls for being an asshole. If only he'd lost 7!
